When the Spruce Grove and District Agricultural society was initially organized, the first thing they did was to build the Agrena, a building which continues to serve the community today. The society then went on to sponsor and organize the Agra Fair, which grew to become one of Western Canada’s largest events of its kind. When the fair was discontinued after a thirty year run, people thought the Agricultural Society was also disbanded, but not so! Another project came along that the society embraced with enthusiasm: save the grain elevator.

The 1958 Alberta Wheat Pool elevator, which is the last remaining wooden elevator to be seen traveling west on the Highway 16A, has been preserved in working condition. It quietly overlooks the hustle and bustle of a community that has expanded beyond the imagination of Spruce Grove’s founders. More than 1800 elevators once dotted the Alberta landscape; three stood in Spruce Grove. In 1995, the elevator was saved from demolition, by the society which saw its potential as a monument to the agricultural heritage of the area, and as a tourist facility.

The organization is run by a dedicated group of volunteer members. Several annual summer events are hosted by the society, attracting visitors from as far as Tasmania, Australia, USA, North West Territories, Hong Kong, Holland and the UK. Area residents proudly bring their visitors to the elevator for a glimpse into Alberta’s agricultural past and to see the inner workings of this massive machine. 

In addition to these events, the Agricultural Society also supports two students to attend the ACCA Youth Program. This program is designed to develop leadership skills, business skills, create lasting friendships and to have fun! to learn more about this program, click on this link. In 2008 , the Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Society celebrated the 35th anniversary of the society, the 50th Anniversary of the elevator, and the 10th anniversary of the Corn Roast.
